Our current project is a home repair ministry in Vernon. Lou Cimaglia, a 22 year old grad student at Monmouth University suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car accident last November that left him paralyzed and requiring 24 hour care. Lou’s options are spending the rest of his life in a distant nursing home or coming home to Vernon with his Mom, Maureen, providing ‘round the clock care.
Having Lou at home in a familiar environment surrounded by family and friends seemed like the best solution, but Maureen’s house wasn’t handicapped accessible. Friends of the Cimaglia family, Paulie & Mary Sordella, contacted Sussex County Habitat and we have been working on getting the house ready for Lou’s homecoming.

The family room on the lower level of the house will become Lou’s bedroom. The utility room has been reduced in size to make room for the handicapped bathroom with a 3’ x 5’ roll in shower. One of the garages is being converted to living space complete with kitchen and laundry area.
Karl Little Plumbing has done the extensive work required for the new bathroom, kitchen, laundry and also to relocate and extend the baseboard heat. Jack Kalafut of Grizzly Electric is bringing the electrical service up to code and wiring the lower level of the house. The tile for the new bathroom was donated by Wayne Tile in Pequannock. As they do for all our projects, Wayne Tile in Wantage gave us a great deal on the laminate flooring for the living areas. Go Minis and Advanced Self Storage in Hardyston supplied the much needed on-site storage pod. Lou’s bedroom will be finished in an under the sea theme by Margaret Schneider of Margaret’s Decorative Painting in Wantage. A local family donated the new lower level front door and the house is now completely handicapped accessible with a ramp from the driveway right into the new living area.
Lots of volunteers have been working to complete this project so Lou can come home as soon as possible.
